Nice summary of the session. Sounds like it was really good, but then this is an area that Lindsay Jordan knows a bit about.

It wasn't entirely what I was expecting when I followed the link, but the stuff covered makes perfect sense...

Whenever I talk to lecturers about blogging and other web technology, I tend to focus on suggesting they use the tools to actively participate in their field of study or some other subject they're interested in, to acclimatise, my thinking being that you learn these particular technologies best when you understand how an invested or interested individual might use them, and my bias says you feel that way about stuff you're either doing as part of your field of interest or obsession.

However, knowing how education and educators work, academics probably have WAY more to write about teaching than they do their field to begin with, and it's also far easier for them to rationalise or justify spending precious time on a new technology if they can build it into their daily or teaching practice and see some concrete value or goals within their working life rather than abstract ones.

My way still feels "right" to me, but this way sounds way more likely to actually get people using blogs!

Hi Chris, this sounds very interesting and in particular, I'd like to find out about how the MBA experience goes. I'm starting to think about including some peer review for our dissertation students on an online distance learning course, so your blog and links to ALT were very helpful.

thanks

I agree that most academics should be keeping web logs of activities. I have experience in doing this and they are an effort to keep up, but personally I find the effort commensurate with the rewards. The most rewarding thing for me is that it allows me to free up more of my mind for thinking. I keep open access logs on what I've read, particularly web content. For instance, I have a link to this page in the Google Docs document that should be available via the following URL: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1840mHzAAybRIK6lvvPOx1-5R9K1xkEDva8NGgjkh0Io/edit

As I've been practising this sort of thing for years, there is now quite an interesting resource...

I've got a lot of respect for other peoples blogging activity. One person who blogs amazingly is Tony Hirst.
